Whether the tattoo community likes it or not they are always taking criticism from people. Some people just don’t understand that tattoos are a good positive thing and they can’t seem to be past the negative aspect of tattoos. Which if these tattoo people would educate themselves on tattoos and the tattoo community they would find out that these awful rough and tumble, hoodlums are actually a great asset to the community. Several tattoo parlors or tattoo studios as some like to be called have charity events going on at the places of business and they raise money all the time for great cause.

Slowly year by year the negative astigmatism that is associated with 1000 tattoos has started to diminish. Because of this several baby boomers are heading out to their local tattoo parlor or tattoo studio to get the ink they have always wanted but felt society would not except them because of it. So why the reason for baby boomers all of a sudden getting inked? Well some tattoo artist say it’s because they felt it wasn’t social acceptable 15 to 20 years ago and a lot of them are facing retirement now and just don’t care what anyone thinks. Several tattoo parlors are reporting that they are seeing a rise in people between the age of 40 and their mid 50’s getting their first tattoos. This piece of news makes sense especially since a poll that was conducted in 2008 revealed that about 20 percent of adults between the age of 40 and 64 reported having one or more tattoos. Another reason these age group is starting to get tattoos this late in life is because people are becoming more comfortable and curious about body art.

Butterfly tattoo designs are designs that have for generations been loved. People have always been fascinated by butterflies: from young children to adults, the butterfly is a symbol of beauty and freedom that is second to none. There are also a large number of references to butterflies in history, and they are the subject of a variety of mixed legends, myths and other such tales. Thus, given their special meaning in almost every culture, it is not strange at all that butterfly tattoo designs are so desired by people.

When people mention butterflies, the first thing that comes to mind is how gentle the creatures are. They also have other attributes, namely their beauty, the mystery associated with them, their symbolism of transformation and their representation of freedom.
1. Beauty: This attribute of the butterfly is one that can hardly be argued about. In a large selection of sizes and shapes, butterflies are quite different even within a single species. Thus, almost every butterfly is unique. It is this beauty and more importantly uniqueness that cause butterfly tattoo designs to be so popular with women. butterly tattoo on back
2. Mystery: There is a large amount of mystery that is associated with the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. This sense of mystery has prevailed throughout the ages so that even today people are captivated by the occurrence. This sense of mystery has also in a way contributed to their popularity as tattoo designs, since many people feel that it represents the mystery within them.
3. Transformation: The metamorphosis of the butterfly also represents transformation from caterpillar to butterfly, which could also be interpreted as a person becoming more beautiful. This has also led to such designs becoming popular among girls who undergo a similar transformation into women.
4. Freedom: This attribute barely needs to be discussed. Butterflies have always been associated with freedom. Flying about flowers with apparently no cares in the world, these creatures have often been extremely envied by men and women alike. Women might find this significance a little more important for them, because of their lack of freedom in history. butterfly tattoo on shoulder

Such designs are also extremely safe, especially is a person is getting their first tattoo ever. The reason for this, more than the designs, is that the symbolism of a butterfly is one that can be treasured forever and will not change with time. It is unlikely that people would not at any point in their lives relate to joy, love and more importantly freedom. Apart from these, such designs are also advised as they are naturally beautiful and can be done with exquisite colouring.
If a person wishes to design his or her own tattoo, then inspirations can be got from one of many online tattoo galleries. Such galleries have huge ranges of designs, ranging from Celtic butterflies to Tribal butterflies, among others.
Such butterfly tattoo designs can thus exist in a variety of shapes, as well as colours and sizes. The best online galleries have expert tattoo artists who will be able to tattoo such designs on any part of one’s body. The most popular areas for butterfly tattoo designs have been found to be the lower back, arm, shoulder and ankle.
Thus with a renewed understanding of the symbolism of the butterfly, a person might wish that they could themselves become butterflies! Sadly, this is not possible, but the next best thing is: a person could advertise their spirit of mystery, beauty, freedom and transformation by getting one of the large number of available butterfly tattoo designs.

Most Commom Tattoo Myths

Just with anything in the world myths get born about certain people, places, procedures, life in general and tattoo are no exception to that either. There are several tattoo myths out there that need to be debunked. People need to be properly infomred of the truths about these myths and that some of them are complete hogwash.

1. The number one myth is that tattoos hurt. While this is true, some people hype it up to make people think it’s like giving child birth. The bottom line is, tattoos do hurt some and you will experience some level of discomfort but its nothing like having a child.

tongue tattoo

2. Tattoos bleed a lot. This is true and false. You will expereince some bleeding when getting a tattoo. However, the outline of the tattoo should rarely bleed, the shading of the tat is what bleeds and it will only bleed up to 5 or 10 minutes. Once you leave the shop your tattoo will 5a8 have stopped bleeding.

3. The tattoo needle that is used is a single needle. This is false. Tattoo guns come with needles that are clustered together and soldered in to groups of odd numbers: 3, 5, 7, etc.

tattoo on back4. Old tattoos turn blue. This is false, However, if you received a tattoo in the 50’s or 60’s you may experience this. Tattoo ink has improved greatly since then. Your tattoo will not turn blue.

5. Lighter color ink hurts more. This is a misconcpetion. Lighter color ink does not hurt more. The reason people beleive this is because the lighter colors are often applied last when the skin is the most sensitive.

Female Tattoos – A Growing Culture

Why are more women getting tattoos today than ever before?

Getting a tattoo or getting "inked" as it is known is becoming more and more common among women. It is a strange thing that women have been getting inked for thousands of years but it is only recently that the stigma associated with tattooed women is dying down. There are some cultures where only women got inked and men were forbidden from doing so. The tattoos in such cultures were used as badges by women to show off their skills like food gathering, basket weaving, marriage ability, and so on. The word "tattoo" comes from the Tahitian word "tattau" and it means "to get marked".

For more than 12 centuries the whole art and process of tattooing has been swinging up and down with it banned in some cultures and promoted in others while going dormant in yet others. Now it seems that tattooing has finally been accepted all over the world and is here to stay with us for a long time. Women in particular were not accepted when tattooed because of social stigma and stereotyping. This was true in western culture up until the 20th century. Things are vastly different now with women outpacing men when it comes to getting inked. Until around half a century ago only 10% of western women got tattoos. Today that number stands at nearly 60%.

female tattoo

According to one study the biggest reason why women are getting tattoos is because they believe it makes them look sexier. This is confirmed by 43% of the women surveyed. 13% get tattooed as they believe it increases that appeal and guys are more attracted towards them and 12% said that tattooing was done for personal reasons. Quite a few number of women also said that they got tattooed after a breakup or divorce as a mark of their independence.

The number of women getting tattoos is growing at an astonishing rate. Gone are the days when women got small tattoos in places where only their husband or partner could see it. The feminine tattoo is now a thing to be displayed with pride. This has also created a high demand for great designs that appeal specially to women and accentuate their femininity. Women are now getting tattoos they can show of instead of hide. Women also spend a lot more time choosing the right design when compared to men who seem to have a limited mindset when it comes to tattoos. Women prefer original designs rather than something out of a catalog that might have been used by dozens of other women.

female fantasy tattoo

Among the most popular tattoo designed preferred by women are all sorts of floral patterns, angels, unicorns, butterflies, fairies, dragonflies, shooting stars, and so on. As a rule women tend to choose smaller tattoos as compared to men though even that trend seems to be changing now. They most preferred body areas where women prefer to be tattooed include lower back, tail end, ankle area, wrist, tummy, and buttocks.

Celtic tattoos and tribal tattoos are two of the most sought-after designs for those who are looking to be tattooed. These two designs have both intricate and interesting play of elements and are both flexible when combine with other symbols.

Celtic tattoo

One of the fastest growing forms of flash in the entire world is a Celtic tattoo. The Celtic tattoo designs are taken by the colorful drawings that are ornamented ancient Celtic manuscripts such as the Book of Kells. Several thousands of years ago, all of Europe was ruled entirely by the Celts.

celtic tattoo graphicCeltic people have a huge variety of cultural symbols and arts . They have their own Celtic names, celtic language and celtic letters. Tattoo is one form of prominent art where these symbols are displayed to show pride in celtic heritage that were once the intelligent, wealthy and accomplished families who play a pivotal role in the making of Europe. Celtic tattoo designs are characterized by spirals, complex and interlacing patterns, maze and knotwork , animal forms and animal zoomorphics. They are often cyclical in feature and revolve on knots that are interweaving and featuring loops with no end that symbolize a never ending cycle of dying and rebirth. Celtic tattoos will communicate a feeling than the representation of a physical object.

Celtic tattoos are experiencing a major change in recent years. Celtic cross is one of the powerful of Celtic tattoo symbols. The Celtic cross tattoo is with a Christian cross with a circle around the intersection and represent belief in Christ. It is one of the most popular variation of celtic tattoos.

Tribal tattoo

According to the proof tribal tattoo was found on a man’s body of over 5000 years. Tattoos are worn on Egyptian mummies also. The practicing of tattoos with in the tribes is to identify the tribe by seeing their tattoo. It was used to denote the bearer’s status or social identity, or as part of the rite of passage to adult status. It is also used for religious or magical purposes as a means of identification or protection after life or as a talisman to insure the bearer’s good luck or to help charm other members of the opposite sex or to preserve youth and health. Undoubtedly tribal tattoos have a much deeper meaning before than they are today.

tribal tattooTribal tattoos have lot of black ink that holds up the tattoo very well and does not fade like other colors. The designs of tribal tattoos are popular and it is easy to design one. The thick, black curving lines and interlocking patterns of the tribal tattoos will give a visual appeal to many of the locations such as the upper arm and the back or the lower back. The styles of today are originated from the various tribes from Borneo, Haida, and Native Americans, Celtic tribes, Maori and the Polynesian tribes. The designs are taken from the mythology and view of the world.

Tribal tattoos and celtic tattoos are popular not only because of its appeal and beauty as a body art but more so because of the deeper meaning attached to it.

The Octo Mom Gets Inked

  Nadya Suleman

Ever since Nadya Suleman gave birth to her octuplets the media is constantly all over her. Not only does she have the only living set of octuplets but she also has 6 other children putting her total at 14. She doesn’t have a job and hasn’t for sometime and she isn’t married let alone seeing anyone. She receives constant criticisms from society because of bringing her octuplets into the world even though she already had 6 children. She is also ridiculed for being a bad mother and trying to cash in on her instant fame, even though she is always denying she doesn’t want to be in the spotlight.

Nadya Suleman Tattoo

Then there is her uncanny resemblance to the beautiful Angelina Jolie, the big pouty lips, the long straight black hair and of course her 14 children. However, Nadya insists that she has always looked this way but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Earlier pictures of Nadya have proved that she hasn’t always had those pouty lips. Well Nadya has now added something else to compare her to the lovely Angelina Jolie. Nadya got herself a tattoo over the weekend. She didn’t go the same route as Angelina and get the longitude/latitude coordinates of the birthplaces of all her children inked on her arm. Instead Nadya got a tattoo on her back. She travelled quite a distance to Kustom Kulture in Hollywood to get her ink. She got a fairly large angel on her back that is surrounded by 14 stars. Of course it is being assumed that the Angel is Nadya and the 14 stars represent her 14 children.

Tattoo Artist Have The Right To Say No

 Tattoo Artist at Work

Believe it or not tattoo artist have the right to say no when it comes to tattooing someone. However, this usually doesn’t happen too often but certain tattoo artist do refuse to tattoo certain tattoos, mainly racial tattoos, hate tattoos or gang tattoos. Tattoo artist also have the right to not tattoo a certain part of your body. If an artist says no, than you have to respect that and come up with an alternate plan or find an artist that will tattoo the body part you want tattooed.

tattoo artist

Strangely enough some tattoo artists feel so strongly about not tattooing a certain body part that they will indeed turn down the business. So one may wonder what’s the big deal. Some tattoo artist feel that having a facial tattoo or tattoo on your hands or neck is a big responsibility and they don’t to be held responsible for their client not being able to get a job down the road or the ridicule they will have to deal with from society so some artist just refuse to do it. Also some artist don’t like tattooing feet and hands because its a quality issue. Hand and feet tattoos don’t hold up as well as other tattoos because they are constantly going through physical “abuse” because those are the two ares of your body that are under the greatest amount of physical abuse as a result of normal everyday life. So some artist feel its a waste of their work, they are also aware of those tattoos needing to be touched up more often than a tattoo on your ankle, back, leg or arm.

So if you run into this problem with your tattoo artist don’t get mind just try to understand they are passionate about their work.

Celebrity Tattoos: Katy Perry

 Katy Perry Tattoo

When one thinks of the, I kissed a girl singer the last thing that comes to their mind is tattoos. This is the best thing about tattoos. People who you would never think to have one has one. This also just goes to show that the stereotype on tattoos couldn’t be more wrong. It is usually those shy, good girls from next door that have a secret love for tattoos. With that being said, Katy Perry does have a tattoo of her own and it just so happens to be in a rather visible place.

Katy Perry Tattoo 2

Katy has a tattoo on her left wrist. Her tattoo is a text tattoo, that simply says Jesus in black ink. No word on why Katy decided to get this tattoo. But there you have it she does have one. There have also been some rumors that she has a lip tattoo on her back somewhere. However, Katy does not rule out the possibility of getting another tattoo. It seems that the hot and cold singer, has been hot and cold about getting a tattoo of Freddie Mercury on her back. Katy has once stated that she looks up the former front-man of Queen and completely idolizes him. She shared that she once almost got a huge tattoo of Freddie’s face on her back, but says she decided against at the last minute. She says she is glad she didn’t do it but on the flip side she still has an urge to get this tattoo on her back. So it is pretty safe to say that this pin up style singer will more than likely add to her tattoo collection one day.

Megan Fox’s New Tattoo

megan fox tattoo

If you are an avid fan of Megan Fox you are well awarethat she sports several tattoos on her gorgeous body. Megan claims to have a total of nine tattoos on her body. Some of those tattoos include a a pink flamingo on her upper thigh, a poem that Megan wrote herself on her rib cage that reads, “there once was a little girl who never knew love until a boy broke her HEART” as well as a Shakespeare quote on her back, “We will all laugh at gilded butterflies.” just to name a few. But if you look at the cover of the latest Empire magazine that Megan is on the cover of you will notice a new little tattoo on her shoulder.

megan fox tattoo 2

If you look close enough you will see that this new little tattoo is in fact an Autobot symbol, most likely to symbolize her work in both Transformer movies. With Megan’s out there personality and wild ways one would just simply think she got this tattoo to give props to the movie that made her a household name. However, if you are a true Megan Fox fan you should know that this photo of Megan was taken a few years back and that new tattoo on her shoulder, isn’t really a tattoo at all. The Autobot symbol was photoshopped on Megan’s shoulder by Empire Magazine to help promote the new Transformers movie. So to make things clear, Megan did not get a new tattoo of the Autobot symbol. As far as anyone knows Megan hasn’t gotten a new tattoo in some time, unless it is somewhere that can’t be seen.

New Tattoo Ink Makes Removal Easier

There has been some controversy over this new tattoo ink that has come out. The new tattoo ink has been out since the fall of 2007 but some people are claiming that the ink doesn’t do what everyone claims it does. This new ink is permanent as well as removable. It is made by storing dye in microscopic capsules that will stay in the skin for good. But if you wake up one day and decide you no longer want your tattoo or regret it one day, it can simply be zapped away with a single laser treatment that is simpler and less painful than the barrage of treatments now needed.

tattoo removal

People are now coming forward who have gotten a tattoo with this new “removable” ink and are saying the removal process isn’t as easy as the makers of this new ink are saying. For instance they state you will only have to under go one laser tattoo removal session. Well real life people are auguring that it takes six sessions just like it would with the old traditional ink.

tattoo removal

The bottom line is people are missing the whole point about getting a tattoo. A tattoo is meant to be permanent and be with you the rest of your life. If you feel you won’t be able to live with a tattoo for the rest of your life, simply don’t get one. Don’t rely on a new ink method to save you. The cost of laser tattoo removal is far more expensive than getting a tattoo and it is pretty much guaranteed even with this new tattoo ink that you will have to under go multiple sessions to get rid of your tattoo. Not only does this new ink cost considerably more than your traditional tattoo ink, but if you decide you don’t want this tattoo anymore you will have to shell out even more money to get it removed. Simply put think before you ink. A tattoo is a life committment if you feel you can’t make it than you are not cut out to have a tattoo.

Tattoos were often considered to be the stuff of macho bikers that wanted to show that they can stand all that pain. Today tattoos have become part of mainstream culture and are being used by people who wish to show their appreciation for art and beauty. During the early days of this change the art of tattooing was more or less confined to men. It is only in recent that more and more women are going in for tattoos. This is because of a vast change in social perception where women tattoos are no longer frowned upon. There are several celebrities that have got tattoos and this has increased popular appeal for this form of art and also increased the social acceptance of tattoos on women. Because of this there are now new designs that specially appeal to feminine tastes.

feminine tattoo

Feminine tattoos are generally smaller and far prettier than those for men. Whereas male tattoos often include animals, logos, and other intimidating symbols tattoos for women feature flowers, butterflies, fairies, and similar concepts that represent delicacy and beauty. Tattoos for women feature thinner lines with more delicate coloring. They are not as aggressive in appearance as male tattoos. However, even this trend is undergoing a change because the increasing popularity of female tattoos has resulted in some women going in for heavy tattoos of the sort preferred by men.

Tattoo artists are now reporting that their largest clientele is made of women. They also state that women are better than men when it comes to the application of tattoos. For women, the design of tattoos is as important as the placement. Women spend far too much time comparing and selecting designs based on the body part where they intend to apply it. Though women are increasingly going in for heavier design elements their focus still remains on the sophisticated and the beautiful.

Two areas are generally preferred by women and these are the lower back and the tail bone areas. The lower back area is quite tantalizing and a sensitive spot for a woman to have a tattoo on. It is visible only in glimpses and like all things that are doled out in rare flashes this increases its appeal. Most of the designs for the lower back area tend to follow a V shape in order to accentuate the figure of the female form. Some of the most commonly used designs for this area include butterflies, angels, lions, hearts, insect wings, serpents, and several sorts of flowers. Nearly all designs are elaborated with wings or tendrils for a more balanced look. The lotus flower is supposed to represent the past, present, and the future. Flowers and animals are representative of femininity and fertility. Serpents and dragons are hints of trouble. The eagle represents courage and determination.

Another preferred area is the foot or ankle. These tattoos represent purity and simplicity. Professional and career minded women usually prefer foot or ankle tattoos because they are highly personal and not overbearing in any way.

Top 6 Tattoo Design Ideas

Tattoos are usually permanent. Therefore, finding the right design should be as important as your decision to get a tattoo. After all there is nothing like the misery or regret a person could feel over a bad design. To help you make your decision, you should seriously consider these top sources of tattoo design ideas.

So you want to get a tattoo, but cannot decide what tattoo design ideas you are looking for? There are so many different ways that you can express your personality, through art on your body, which makes it difficult to decide what you want. You should have a specific reason for getting a tattoo, it may be to remember a loved one, or you may just want to express your own individuality. Whatever your reason may be, finding the right tattoo design ideas for you may be a bit of a challenge.

Tattoo Artists

The first and number one source of tattoo design ideas is reputable tattoo artists themselves. An artist who has been doing his trade for quite sometime and has a wide base of satisfied customers would know first hand about good designs and tattoo design ideas that would specifically fit you.

Tattoo artists can help you understand the meaning of a design, and you can easily discuss with them the design that best suits your personality. You can even give an artist your idea and leave the designing to him. The downside to this is that different artists have different opinions and you often have to do a lot of leg work and design book flipping to find the best artist and design

Online Galleries

The best tattoo designs can also be found on online galleries. There are lots of free and paid galleries to choose from. These galleries contain thousands of designs conveniently arranged in categories with new designs regularly coming in. The best thing about searching online for tattoo design ideas is that you can simply browse in the comfort of your own home. For a fee, you can print a design that you like and take it to an artist. If you do not have an artist yet, some galleries will offer you a directory of tattoo artists near your place.

Forums

Ideas are simply limitless in forums. There are numerous independent or gallery attached tattoo forums to choose from. In these forums you can upload your designs and ask forum members to give their opinion about it. You can also comment on the designs of others and maybe even get some inspiration from the member uploaded designs. This is a great way to interact and ask real average people like you their unbiased opinion.

Printed Material

Who says you need to restrict your tattoo design ideas on catalogs and galleries. Look through an assortment of books printed material for possible tattoo design ideas. You can flip through your favorite comic books or even look in science, astrology, psychology, archeology, sociology and anthropology books. Find books at http://www.amazon.com

Other People

Consider asking friends and family members for design ideas also, especially those who are fond of the art themselves. Aside from these people, you could also simply observe what other people have and form a judgment on which designs look great and which one look horrible.

Your Own Creativity

Trust your own creativity. You can mix and match designs or you can answer some questions to arrive at a good design. What are you interested in? What inspires you? What is your life long passion? What do you love the most?

Today, people choose to be tattooed for cosmetic, sentimental/memorial, religious, and magical reasons, and to symbolize their belonging to or identification with particular groups, including criminal gangs but also a particular ethnic group or law-abiding subculture. Some Maori still choose to wear intricate moko on their faces. In Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, the yantra tattoo is used for protection against evil and to increase luck.

Many younger persons who identify with Christianity choose to express their faith by getting a tattoo that is related to their belief system. To this end, there are a wide variety of Christian cross tattoos on the market today. Here are a few examples of tattoos containing crosses that may be of interest.

First, there are tattoos that depict a basic Protestant cross, a Roman Catholic crucifix, and an Orthodox cross. Each of these designs have their own particular appeal, and help to signal an indication of the basic theology held by the wearer of the tattoo. These basic designs are widely available in just about any tattoo shop. However, the designs are such that any talented tattoo artist can easily replicate them from a picture of graphic of any of the three.

Another classification of cross tattoos would be those special ones that are related to a particular denominational logo. Church denominations such as the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ all incorporate the use of a cross in the logo design that is used in their publications and around their churches. In many cases, both temporary tattoos that are used in youth camps as well as permanent types can be purchased and displayed proudly.

A third example of tattoos that utilize the cross would be special designs that are indicative of a particular organization. For example, a motorcycle club that was formed among a group of Christian adherents might choose to include a cross in the tattoo design that all members choose to get. In like manner, faith based groups of cowboys or stock car racers might also choose to design a tattoo that includes the symbol of the cross. The same is true for any type of group that comes together and chooses to include religion as part of their corporate identity.

The cross has a great deal of meaning to many people. For those that choose to express that significance through the act of getting a tattoo, the options today are many and varied. Why not check out some designs today?

The Most Popular Choices Of Wing Tattoos

Wing tattoos are one of the most popular and most flexible tattoo images today. They can be illustrated in countless forms, use various designs, and convey many different meanings. Wing tattoo designs often have inspirational or spiritual symbolism. They also serve as an outlet for man’s fascination for anything airborne. Choices are so extensive; you could definitely find one that appeals to you. Of this genre, the following are the most widely preferred choices among tattoo aficionados.

Angel Wings

Angel wings are without a doubt the most popular among wing tattoos. Basically spiritual figures, angels are found mostly on Judaist, Christian, and Islamic scriptures. They are believed to be protectors of the faithful. They are also believed to guide people away from harm. As such, angel wing tattoos are recognized as spiritual symbols. Wings associated with angels are spiritual, signifying enlightenment, assistance and protection – to be taken under the wing – and inspirational. They are often inked at the back, in the area of the shoulder blades. Angel wings are frequently made into larger-than-life pieces.

Butterfly Wings

Butterfly wings are one of the most sought after tattoos in the past ten years, mostly by women. Butterflies are powerful symbols of religious, spiritual, and cultural practices. The winged form of a butterfly has been used as a symbol for the human soul since ancient times. Butterfly wings also signify freedom, fantasy, and flight. They are one of the most beautiful tattoo images that represent freedom and resurrection. They make popular selections as a first tattoo among women. Because of its small size and simplicity, they can be situated easily in the body.

Animal Wings

Animal wings, which are naturally often associated with birds, represent speed, elevation, freedom and aspiration. Birds have been deemed as symbols of strength and wisdom, and have always been linked to the supernatural because of their ability to fly – a trait man has attributed to gods and goddesses. The most popular birds of choice for tattoo designs are eagles, falcons, hawks, sparrows, owls, crows, ravens doves, hummingbirds, butterflies and dragonflies. They are tattooed virtually everywhere in the body.

Fairy Wings

95% of people who get a fairy tattoo inked on their skin are females. Fairy wing tattoos are some of the most universally sought after tattoo designs for females. This design provides an escape to a world of magic and fantasy. Fairy wings can be very versatile too, and cater to more than just bubbly personalities. While the usual design is lively, colorful, and flamboyant, there are gothic fairy wing tattoo designs as well. Fairy wings are often placed at the upper back, but just like in any other tattoo where there is no written rule, the options are limitless.

History Of Tribal Tattoos

Tribal tattoos, although considered as very modern in design, actually dates to thousands of years back. As the name connotes, tribal tattoos originated from tribes or organized ethic groups of the past.

Neo-tribal tattoos are very popular nowadays. Celebrities and other famous people sport this type of tattoo purely because tribal designs are very striking. Mike Tyson has a tribal tattoo on the left side of his face and Angelina Jolie also has one on her tummy. Charmed, Alyssa Milano, has a tribal tattoo at the back of her neck and the list goes on and on.

Another explanation why tribal tattoos are gaining unstoppable popularity is because they are easy to draw. Amateur tattoo artists who want to go into the body art arena do practice on tribal tattoo designs for starters. Tribal tattoos are one of the easiest images to ink. They basically involved swirls, loops, crescents and sharp edges interlaced with each other. A tribal tattoo design is frequently symmetrical, one of the reasons why they are fairly easy to draw.

Looking back, tribal tattoos are actually part of customs of certain cultures. Getting a tattoo is a symbolism that marks a person’s passage to adulthood. In some tribes, if a girl cannot take the pain brought about by tattooing, she is considered a weakling and cannot bear the pain of labor during child birth, thus, making her unmarriageable. On the other hand, if a boy cannot take the pain of tattooing, he is considered a coward. This is one reason why he may be segregated from the rest of his tribesmen and the reason why he can is a danger as a warrior.

In some cultures, like in Maori tribe in New Zealand, tattoos are a sign of social status. The more elaborate your tattoos are, the higher your position is on the social ladder. Enhanced tattoos are symbolism of a shift from one status to another. The chieftain of the Maori people holds the most prestigious and most intricate tattoo design. Maori women are also known to tattoo their lips and chin.

In the tribes of Hawaii, tattooing is also popular. Tribesmen believe in tattoo gods and those who want to have a tattoo initiate the session with a prayer asking the tattoo gods for a safe procedure that would not end up in injury or death. The prayers are also intended for the fast healing of the wounds and so that the tattoo design would come out as handsome and eye-catching.

Polynesian tattoos are thought to be one of the first tribal tattoos to reach the modern world. James Cook, who was the first explorer to land on the Polynesian Islands, was said to have seen the very first form of neo tribal tattoos way back in 1970′s. When they sailed back to Europe, his men where already inked with tattoos similar to today’s modern tribal designs. The tribal tattoos are worn on the sailor’s chest area and upper arms.

Today, tribal tattoos have gone to a brand new level. The reasons for their existence are no longer primitive but they are displayed as a symbolism of self expression and art.
