Besides being good at art and drawing, you also have to study tattoo art.To be a good tattoo artist- a true good tattoo artist- you need to know the history of tattoo art. Where it started (which you will have no luck finding out because nobody knows, but you can find out the first few places the art was found), who influenced art the most. you should also brush up on your knowledge of Samuel O’ Reilly. And you should also do research on early civilizations and tribes. You also have to know the meanings behind certain religious, tribal, language, traditional, and other tattoos. Such as the koi fish, or the koi dragon. And you also have to learn how to add detail to the image that is already provided for you to tattoo. You have to know how to sterilize equipment, how to change needles [new needle for each person]. You have to know how to clean the tattooed area of the body after tattooing it, and how to wrap the tattoo to keep it safe. You have to know how to handle different people with different personalities and different wishes. You have to know how to tell someone that the tattoo they want wont work, and how to explain to them how you can make it work… which means you have to know how to make an unworkable tattoo WORK.
It’s definitely important to practice. You can buy a tattoo gun and needles, and you can practice on fake skin or certain types of fruit. I find melons and Apples to be the best. Apples especially because you can tell when the needle has gone too deep, because it will start to bleed juice. Oh yes, which reminds me, you have to know how deep you can put the needle, and what colors go best with different skin tones. You also have to make sure that your station is clean, and that you wear a different pair of gloves every time you tattoo a different person. The most important thing is to use STERILIZED equipment. Unsterilized equipment can lead to the spread of diseases, among other things.
Wow, that sounds and looks like a lot. but if you really want to be apart of the tattoo world, you have to take in a lot of information. But don’t worry, it may sound intimidating, but once you get used to it, it will just become apart of your everyday life. Education on the history of Tattoo art will become like counting from 1 to 10.
Good lucks to you in the future and present.
OH, and you should definitely become familiar with the other tattoo artists and parlors, locally and out of town.
Buy yourself a tattoo gun and swear to only use it on practice material for 3 years. Honeydew melon is a good practice material because it is pale and has rather thin skin.
